The Real Reason Jonathan Scott & Jacinta Kuznetsov Split

That certainly seems to be the case with Jonathan Scott. As one half of the successful Property Brothers, he has served as a guru to countless fans who dream of fixing things around the house. But when it came to his relationship with Jacinta Kuznetsov, he was just unable to fix what was broken.

What was it that drove these two apart, and how did they each react to the sudden breakup? Keep reading to learn the shocking answers!

How did Jonathan Scott and Jacinta Kuznetsov meet?

Jonathan Scott and Jacinta Kuznetsov met during a charity gala back in 2015. To hear her describe things, this wasn’t exactly a meet-cute. She told People, “I kind of shrugged him off at first” but that after he “proceeded to social media stalk” her, she gave him a second chance.

They seemed very happy for a time. In March 2017, she told People that “it’s been happiness ever since.” But barely a year later, the two broke up in April 2018. The two had only dated for about two years, but they seemed happy enough together that their split really surprised their biggest fans.

A somewhat secretive split

As we noted, Scott and Kuznetsov broke up in April 2018. However, Scott didn’t really say anything about their split until May 2019. Why is that?

One reason seems to be that Scott is a very private person, especially when it comes to relationships. In fact, he spent years telling fans about his life as a single man before admitting that he had been married before. He married Kelsy Ully in 2007, but the two ended up getting a divorce only two years later. 

If Scott is able to keep an entire marriage under his hat for so long, he is more than capable of keeping secrets about his latest big breakup. At the time of the split, People reports he said, “Sometimes life takes you on unexpected paths and those paths aren’t always in the same direction.”

Continuing, Scott wrote, “There’s no drama or negativity; no jealousy or hate. Not even sadness or sorrow. Our memories are filled with joy and we will continue to advocate for each other as friends wherever we go.”

The next year, though, he was finally willing to dish on what really drove them apart.

What drove them apart?

According to Scott, what really drove him and Kuznetsov apart was the hectic schedule of his Property Brothers show combined with her own busy life. As he told People, “One of the things that drew me to Jacinta the most when we met was that she was fiercely independent. She wanted to accomplish a lot of things in her life, and that did not involve following a partner around on the road as they pursued their career.”

Like all good couples, they tried to compromise at first. “We agreed that it would not always be Jacinta who travels to me. We’d try to trade off 50-50. It didn’t take long before this became difficult and eventually impossible.”

Realizing they couldn’t compromise to each other’s satisfaction, the two called things off for good. Soon afterward, each one reacted to their split in a very different way.

The surprising way Scott and Kuznetsov moved on

As the months went by after their breakup, Scott seemingly threw himself into his work. To hear him tell it, he just wasn’t ready to move on and find someone else. “Right now, I am pretty intimately involved with fourteen construction projects,” he joked to People toward the end of 2018. Growing more serious, he added, “I think the right person will come along when they come along. Other than that, I haven’t really put any thought into it. For me, it’s not a focus right now.”

It certainly seemed to be a focus for Kuznetsov, though. Very shortly after she and Scott broke up, Kuznetsov began dating conservationist and film director Will Allen. Only eight months after she and Scott broke up, Kuznetsov and Allen were engaged. While they haven’t tied the knot yet, the sheer speed of their relationship took Scott by surprise.

“I was upset, I won’t lie. I was not ready to date. It wasn’t even on my radar,” he admitted to People. “But I’m a realist, and I knew that it was not for me to say when and who she would date.”

Are Scott and Kuznetsov still on good terms?

Jacinta Kuznetsov has mostly flown under the radar since splitting with Scott. She seems to enjoy not living in the shadow of his Property Brothers fame anymore. But the question remains: are these two former lovebirds still on good terms?

According to Scott, even though he doesn’t speak to Kuznetsov that often, things are good between them. As he told People, “Regardless of what we had, I’ve come to terms with the fact that we were not right as life partners.” Continuing, he added, “Though we don’t speak regularly, we are on good terms and both know we are there if needed.”

And you don’t have to worry too much about Scott’s love life. While it took him longer to rebound than it did Kuznetsov, he eventually started dating someone you might have heard of: Zooey Deschanel!
