Admit it: just looking at that title was enough to get you singing the iconic Spice Girls song “Wannabe.” At one point in time, this musical group was on top of the world: they topped the charts, toured the world, and even had a cinematic debut in the form of the cult classic film Spice World.
However, you probably haven’t thought about the group in a while, and there’s a simple reason for that: the band broke up way back in 2000, and while the band has had the occasional reunion, they never again reached the superstar status they enjoyed in the ‘90s. That made us curious: just what has our favorite quintet of girl power singers been up to in the last two decades? Keep reading to discover exactly what each of the Spice Girls is up to today!
Posh Spice leads a posh life
It’s tough to argue with the fact that Posh Spice (better known these days as Victoria Beckham) has had the most successful life since the band broke up. Part of this is due to her own very successful fashion career: she was interested in fashion long before she was interested in music, and she introduced her own fashion line in 2008 that absolutely took the world by storm.
That would be impressive enough, but Posh Spice also married soccer legend David Beckham in 1999, and the two welcomed their first child shortly before the Spice Girls broke up. They’ve since had three more children and generally established themselves as one of the strongest power couples in the world. Ultimately, the fact that she has remained a fashion icon proves that Posh Spice never stopped being posh, even after she left the Spice Girls.
Scary Spice and her scary marriage
After the Spice Girls broke up, Scary Spice (real name Melanie Brown, better known as Mel B) tried her hand at a little bit of everything in the entertainment world. She released her own album, Hot, and she released a memoir of her young life in 2002. Later, she appeared in a number of TV shows and films, and she even branched into reality television by serving as a judge on the Australian versions of both The Masked Singer and X Factor.
Unfortunately, Scary Spice has had a somewhat scary life when the cameras weren’t rolling, and that’s all thanks to her marriage. After her divorce from Jimmy Gulzar and an intense relationship with Eddie Murphy, Mel B married Stephen Belafonte, and before they divorced, she alleged that he abused her and even requested a restraining order (she later dropped both the allegations and the request).
Thanks to all this tumultuous romance, Scary Spice has several children: a daughter with Gulzar, another daughter with Murphy, and yet another daughter with Belafonte. And now that she is engaged to stylist Rory McPhee, we’re hoping that she finally gets her happily ever after.
Baby Spice has babies
At the height of the Spice Girls’ fame, Baby Spice (Emma Lee Bunton) was considered (you guessed it) the baby of the group. Since the group broke up, she’s kept pretty busy: she released solo albums A Girl Like Me in 2002 and My Happy Place in 2019. She also served as an “architect” on the musical reality show series Boy Band.
The most shocking thing for longtime fans, though, is that Baby Spice has babies of her very own! She met her future husband Jade Jones in 1998, and they didn’t exactly have a straightforward romance: the duo split in 1999 and 2002 before getting back together for good in 2004. The unconventional couple didn’t tie the knot until 2021, and they have two lovely children who are now the highest priority of both their lives.
Ginger Spice never approaches life gingerly
Ginger Spice (better known these days as Gerri Halliwell) followed in the footsteps of some of her bandmates after the Spice Girls broke up. She actually released her solo album Schizophonic in 1999 shortly before the official breakup and another album, Scream If You Wanna Go Faster, right after the breakup in 2001. In 2005, she released a final solo album, Passion. When not cranking out new tunes, Ginger Spice found time to write a memoir and hopes to someday write another; she also appeared in films and TV shows, including a great appearance in Sex and the City.
When it comes to her personal life, Ginger Spice has had some ups and downs. She dated filmmaker Sacha Gervasi and even had his daughter, but they never married and she ended up raising the child as a single mother. That lasted until 2015 when she married Christian Horner, becoming a loving stepmom to his two kids. Later, they had a son named Morty, and they now spend their days leading an idyllic country life together.
Sporty Spice is not so sporting about the band
Sporty Spice (also known as Melanie Chisholm, or Mel C for short) spent more effort than her former bandmates at creating a life outside the shadow of their famous musical group. This included releasing three solo albums: Northern Star in 1999, Reason in 2003, and Beautiful Intentions in 2005. She also tried her hand at romance, but that fizzled a bit like her solo career: she fell in love with Thomas Starr in 2002 and they had a daughter together, but the two split up in 2012.
When the rest of the Spice Girls were staging a reunion in 2016, Sporty Spice surprised the world by announcing she wouldn’t be joining them. She eventually caved and joined a 2019 reunion, but that earlier refusal still served as a powerful reminder that she’d like to be remembered more for her accomplishments as Melanie Chisholm rather than as Sporty Spice.
